Project Description:

"Legends, Dreams and Realities" is designed to provoke laughter and deep reflection in the audience. Teatro Nahual's theatrical and musical production is written and directed by artistic director Verónica Meza. The play depicts popular legends of South America, Central America, and Mexico that dates back centuries, each showing Hispanic culture and myth. These include "La Llorona," a legend about the ghost of a weeping woman; "La Mulata de Córdoba," a myth of suspected sorcery in Veracruz, Mexico, during the Holy Inquisition. "María Angula," an Ecuadorean tale of a naïve wife who tries new recipes on her husband that include the most unrealistic food styles. "Legends, Dreams and Realities" will also include the premiere of colorful legends that originated in Náhuatl, known informally as the Aztec language. These include interpretations of the "Origin of the Corn" and the "Origin of the World." The theatrical project also touches on modern-day reality where two immigrant students shared their experiences by adapting to the American culture, learning English, and being bi-cultural in California. The play is bilingual: Spanish and English. Most of the play is acted in Spanish with one reality in English. But Teatro Nahual can offer an English translation throughout a screen if the school requires it.

Duration of the project:

"Legends, Dreams and Realities" has a length of 1 hour and 15 minutes.

Project Description:

Learning Experience in Students: It is essential to provide students with theater and art opportunities to develop their social skills and be in contact with their emotional being. Students need to speak, hear and reflect on the stories of their families. Also, they must recognize and celebrate their costumes and traditions as part of their cultural background. By watching this bilingual play, "Legends, Dreams, and Realities," students will identify with their roots. They will learn about Latino American legends and mirror themselves and their parents on the immigration stories.
Performance Opportunity for Schools: Teatro Nahual can offer the play "Legends, Dreams and Realities" starting on October 2021 through June 2022 to any school that desires this theatrical experience for their students, teachers, staff, and families. We are open to bringing this play directly to your school during a school assembly, selected Spanish immersion classes, an after-school program where parents can be invited. Also, Teatro Nahual can perform on Saturday morning during a matinee or particular program. "Legends, Dreams and Realities" can be presented in any school theater, cafeteria, or multipurpose room. However, Teatro Nahual is conscious of carefully handling our presentations due to the pandemic. We can present our play outdoors, on the patio, or in any assigned field where students and the school community can enjoy it by keeping some distance.
